The DO'S and DON'TS of Grocery Shopping
"Grocery Shopping, Healthy Eating, Healthy Meals and Healthy
Grocery Shopping"
By Tony Ostian, Health and Fitness Director
Does this happen to you?
You go to the grocery store just for milk and you end up coming home with a whole bag full of
groceries.
Now if you answered yes to this question, you're not alone because the majority of us go into the store for one thing and end up coming out with more.
So, if you're interested in healthy eating and managing your weight, the best place to start is the grocery store.
You see, it's very important that you're aware of what to shop for. With that said
. . .
What you should DO when you go to the grocery store:
- Plan ahead.
Make a list of the foods you need before you shop and stick to that list.
- Begin in the produce section.
Fill your shopping cart up with fresh fruits and vegetables. Be
adventurous and try new foods.
- Stop in the meat, poultry, and fish section next.
Focus on lean cuts of beef and pork. When purchasing poultry try to
choose white meat that is skinless. Include a lot of fish because all fish is
low in fat.
- Beware of the placement of foods in a store.
Companies try to entice you to buy their items, so they usually place them
at the entrance and ends of the aisle.
- Read food labels.
Beware of the ingredients found in the foods you buy. Choose foods
that are low in fat.
- Shop every day.
This can help you focus on what you need. The food you purchase will
be used before it spoils.
- Do a final check before you check out.
Ask yourself if there's anything in your cart that you don't need. Make
sure you have everything on your list.
What you SHOULDN'T DO when you go to the grocery store:
- Don't forget your grocery list.
This is the key to your success while shopping.
- Don't shop when you're stressed.
If the grocery store is busy, this will add to your stress and you wont be
able to concentrate on your shopping.
- Don't shop when you're hungry.
This can cause you to buy what you don't need.
- Don't let your children pressure you into buying things that aren't on your list.
Let your children help you make up the list, so they know what you're
going to buy.
- Don't be tempted by the free samples offered.
They're often high in fats and calories.
Before heading to the store, take the time to clean out your cupboards and refrigerator. Then when you get home, you'll have all of the necessary ingredients to cook
healthy meals.Just remember – half of your weight-loss battle is already won when you start with
healthy grocery shopping.
